5 Roadblocks Preventing You From Creating Consistent Content

When I talk to business owners who are a team of one, their biggest complaints are usually, “I need to make more consistent income,” and (in the same breath) “I know I need to be showing up more, but I don’t have time.”

They either have no idea what content to create or have no energy to create it and manage it so they see results.

Here's the thing, though — creating content doesn't have to be overwhelming and scattered-brained. It’s possible to create a strategy that helps you show up, share your ideas, and turn those ideas into revenue. I want to show you how!

Warning: this isn't the sexy side of content creation. There aren't any secrets, quick tools, templates, or ways to make it go any faster. Trust me, I've tried looking for the shortcuts, I've tried all the hacks, but they do not work unless you build a solid foundation first. So here’s how to do that.

Know Who You're Talking To

This, out of all the tips I'm going to give you here, will make your life 100 times easier. That's not to say the other things I'm going to be talking about aren't important. It's just that knowing who you're talking to is the basis for every piece of content you create.

When I was a pretty green entrepreneur, I thought it was okay to throw my video out there and see what stuck. I thought that deciding I would create content for people who used YouTube was enough of a game plan.

Oh, 2015 Trena…

Instead, I should have narrowed down my niche to time-strapped business owners who want to be consistent with YouTube content. Not knowing this put me in a bind for the next few years because I could have been doing so much more with my channel, but hey, ya live and ya learn.

You don't need to get so detailed that you know what they eat for breakfast or what kind of scrunchies they wear (let's just agree that's a bit much), but knowing the who will help you find your why.

Know Your Why

I'm not talking about your mission statement here. I'm talking about knowing where to direct people with each piece of content.

If I'm uploading videos just because, with no clear direction, I'm basically working for free because they aren't leading anywhere. And I don't know about you, but I can't afford to work for free because of those dang Lunchables my kids want to eat every day.

Know Your Calls to Action

This ties in with the point above. If there isn't a CTA in your video, whether that's to a sales page, your Instagram, or another video, you're basically working for free.

CTAs are the most important part of your video. And no, saying "like, comment, and subscribe" isn't enough. You have to get more specific.

Here are a few examples of places you can lead your audience:

  • Freebie or lead magnet

  • Digital product or course

  • Or to simply consume more content on your YouTube channel

By doing this, you're providing a way for your audience to buy from you and build a know, like, and trust factor.

Work Out Your Strategy

Okay, now onto the part you're probably a little more excited to hear about.

When I plan my strategy, I take it a quarter at a time. Otherwise, there's no way I'll be able to focus or even predict what will happen in life when I get busy, especially with having kids. One of the best parts about owning your own business is getting to shift my schedule when my life does. I like to leave myself open for that.

In my quarterly planning sessions, I pick one major focus for the month. It could be my membership, a webinar, or working on my affiliate revenue.

The content during that month then needs to always point back to that major goal.

If I know my audience, then I know my why, and I know which is the best direction to send them.

And I do the same thing with my content on other platforms. Whether it's a blog, a Pin, or an Instagram post, I repurpose my video content by pulling chunks of information and formatting them to fit that platform. It keeps my messaging consistent and helps me stay on track to focus on that month's goal.

Put Time into Your Calendar to Get it Done

The idea of creating consistent content is glamorous, but actually sitting down to do it is a whole other story. If you're serious about getting this done, you need to block time in the calendar to do it.

Every Tuesday, I block my schedule so I can create content, then on Wednesdays, when I do my hair and makeup, I record all my Reels and videos. This keeps me from letting something random get in the way of that time because I have committed to doing it in my own mind.

Your schedule doesn't have to look like mine. Maybe you just try once a month. Either way, this is a major part of getting your content strategy to where you want it to be.

Need Accountability for Staying Consistent?

I know it can be hard to commit to showing up for your business. You've got client work up to your eyeballs and a personal life to tend to. But once you make a commitment — and a plan — it gets a lot easier. Accountability is also really great if you want to stay consistent with your content so you can reach your business goals.

If you would love to have some accountability in reaching your content (and revenue) goals, I want to invite you to my FREE private training, How to Hit Consistent Monthly Revenue in Your Business.
