Make a YouTube Plan

A YouTube plan is very similar to a business plan or a marketing plan but it’s going to include things that are specific to your YouTube channel. Let’s break down what you’ll need to have in your YouTube Plan.

  • Goals- What are your goals for your YouTube Channel. The goals that you set will affect what you do strategy-wise.

  • Target Audience- You have to know who you’re trying to reach with your videos. This tells YouTube who to put your content in front of and tells you what kind of content to create.

  • Umbrella Topic- Get clear on what you’re going to be talking about on your channel so that YouTube knows who to serve you to. If you’re all over the place in your topics, YouTube isn’t sure where to put you.

  • Who’s Creating Similar Content to You- This allows you to see what people are responding to and what kind of content they’re creating. This is market research.

  • Your Brand- You need to define your brand and your style. Canva is a great place to help make that happen.

  • When to Post- You only need to commit to one video per week. So think about your week. What day is best for you to post?

  • When to Film- What days of the week can you commit to film. You can batch film on one day or even film once a week!

Set Up Your Channel

If you’re starting a YouTube channel, there are some things that you need to set up on the back end. There are three specific things that you need to dig into.

Your Channel Banner.

This is the large graphic on your channel that is essentially your billboard. It tells your visitors who you are and what your channel is about. People want to know right away what your channel is going to offer them.

Channel Keywords.

In your settings, you’ll be adding your channel keywords. These are words that encompass what your channel is about and what words people may search in order to find you.

About Section.

This is going to be a summary about who you are and what your channel is all about. I highly recommend that you focus your first few sentences on creating a strong pitch for as to why people should watch your channel.

Create a Content Plan

The last thing I want you to do is to get on YouTube and run out of ideas. So I highly recommend coming up with 20-30 ideas. I have several resources available to help you make that happen.

You can also start to think in series because YouTube loves content that can turn into binge session style videos!

Another pro tip I can give you here is to track this electronically. The last thing you want to do is write your ideas down in a notebook or on post it notes, only to have them disappear, never to be seen again. Listen, it happens. Instead, use a digital tool to keep track of it all. I use Asana for all of this but there are many tools you can choose from!

Create Templates

Take the time up front to create templates like…

  • animations

  • title screens

  • call outs

  • end screens

  • thumbnails

This is going to help you keep your editing speedy and smooth. You can also pick a few songs that you can use for your background!

Learn More About YouTube

You need to watch YouTube. Yep. That’s right! You need to be on YouTube and watching to see how things are working. I schedule time every single week to see what’s going on on YouTube so that I can stay fresh on what’s working and what’s not!
