Stop Making This YouTube Mistake and Grow Faster

Are you working harder than you need to on your YouTube channel without seeing the results you want? If so, you’re not alone. About 90% of small YouTube channels or creators just starting out make a critical mistake that slows down their growth. Let’s fix that so you can get better results—more views, more leads, and ultimately, more sales.

I’ve worked with all kinds of creators:

• Those just starting their channels

• Those feeling stuck

• Those achieving rapid success

And one thing is clear—certain mistakes pop up time and time again. Today, we’ll tackle the most common ones and get you on the path to growth.

The Big Mistake: Lack of Clarity on Your Value

As a small channel, being precise about the value you provide is non-negotiable. You need to answer two questions:

1. Who are you creating content for?

2. What are you helping them achieve?

When the YouTube algorithm understands who your videos are for, it can find and connect you with those viewers faster. But when your value proposition is unclear, your growth slows down because your audience isn’t sure why they should stick around.

Example: Janel’s Yoga Channel

Take my client Janel, for example. She runs a yoga channel, but initially, her target audience wasn’t clear. Yoga for who? Women? Men? Postpartum moms? Women in their 60s?

By narrowing her focus to yoga for lifters—people who want to improve their personal records through yoga and stretching—we created a unique value proposition that speaks directly to her audience. This clarity not only helps the algorithm but also shapes her content strategy and marketing efforts.

Example: Aimee’s Financial Channel

Another client, Aimee, struggled with a banner that said, “Ditch financial stress for good.” While this sounds appealing, it’s too broad. Financial stress looks different for someone just out of college versus someone preparing for retirement.

By narrowing her focus to address a specific demographic, like “managing money in your 30s” or “managing money in marriage,” Aimee can create content that directly answers her audience’s specific problems.

The First 10 Seconds of Your Videos Matter

Your content’s opening moments are make-or-break for your audience retention. Too often, creators waste this precious time on unnecessary introductions. For example, starting a video with, “Hey, it’s [Name], if we haven’t met before…” doesn’t hook your audience—they already clicked on your video to solve a problem.

Instead, dive straight into how you’ll help them. If you’re unsure what works best, your YouTube analytics hold the answers. Review your retention data to see where viewers drop off and use this to craft stronger video openings.

If you’re serious about growing your YouTube channel, nailing the first few seconds of your videos is crucial. That’s why I created the Video Game Plan—a step-by-step system to help you plan and structure your videos for maximum impact.

This mini-course breaks down exactly how to hook your viewers, keep them engaged, and guide them toward action. It includes the exact template I use for my videos and my clients’ videos, so you can confidently create content that drives results.

Here’s what one recent buyer had to say:

“This is the most detailed YouTube training I’ve ever had. The Video Game Plan is a game-changer!”
